INTERNATIONAL WOMEN'S DAY 2019

5th ANNUAL WE GLOBAL BELL RINGINGS
RING THE BELL FOR GENDER EQUALITY

For the fifth consecutive year, a global collaboration across 75 stock exchanges around the world plan to ‘Ring the Bell for Gender Equality’, to celebrate International Women’s Day 2019 (Friday, 8 March 2019).

The events are a partnership between, Women in ETFs, UN Global Compact, UN Women, Sustainable Stock Exchanges (SSE) Initiative, IFC, and the World Federation of Exchanges to raise awareness about the business case for women’s economic empowerment and the opportunities for the private sector to advance gender equality and sustainable development.

The UN Women’s theme for International Women’s Day 2019 is ‘Think equal, build smart, innovate for change’.

The theme focuses on innovative ways in which the private sector can advance gender equality and women’s empowerment, particularly in the areas of social protection systems, access to public services, and sustainable infrastructure.

In addition to the bell ringing events, the bell ringing partner organizations applaud the work done to date, and encourage stock exchanges to take further action to improve gender equality in their markets. Recommended actions include signing the CEO Statement of Support for the Women’s Empowerment Principles (WEPs); promoting gender equality in their workforce; introducing gender equality standards and supporting gender-equality themed investment products; providing guidance, training, mentoring, and education to market participants on gender equality and the role of gender diversity in business performance; and encouraging or requiring listed companies to publicly report on relevant gender metrics.

In March 2018, a record 65 exchanges rang their bells for gender equality, and this year looks set to be even bigger, with more than 75 exchanges confirmed as taking part.

 BEYOND MEASURE
THE SMALL IMPACT OF BIG CHANGES

At this time of year, we tend to be ambitious to take on new challenges, create long lists to accomplish and conquer great tasks. A popular TED speaker, Dr. Margaret Heffernan [bio] challenges us for a new kind of thinking, arguing that people and organizations can have a big impact by making deceptively small changes such as using every mind on the team, rethinking mistakes and encouraging time off from work.

Dr. Heffernan is a wise and witty storyteller who fully engages her audience. Filled with interesting anecdotes, her insights into human behavior have transformed organizations.

  • How was intelligence gathering revolutionized?
  • How did one organization increase their revenue by 15 million by instituting a short coffee break?

Heffernan investigates all these scenarios and comes to the same conclusion: big improvements can come from simply making small changes.

UNDERSTANDING ETF TRADING
An in-depth look at the nuances of ETF Trading

One of the most common, and simplest, ways to explain Exchange-Traded Funds has been to state they are like mutual funds but trade like stocks. Most people can understand the fund piece, however many have difficulty with the exchange-traded piece. In this Webcast, Understanding ETF Trading, experts from Virtu Financial, BlackRock and the NYSE will answer your questions and provide an in-depth look into the nuances of ETF trading.

Lois Gregson, WE Webcast Team Member, moderates the discussion on:

  • ETF listing and launch process
  • Understanding the importance of Issuer, Liquidity Providers, and Venue
  • Understanding liquidity
  • Changes implemented since the flash crash in 2010
  • Tips for best execution (for both retail and institutional trades)

  INTERNATIONAL WOMEN'S DAY 2018

RING THE BELL FOR GENDER EQUALITY

For the 4th year, 65 stock exchanges around the world collaborated to “Ring the Bell for Gender Equality” in celebration of International Women’s Day 2018 (March 8th).

The events were a partnership between Women in ETFs, UN Global Compact, UN Women, Sustainable Stock Exchanges (SSE) Initiative, IFC, World Federation of Exchanges.

As part of the events, participants were encouraged to make commitments to improve gender equality in their markets, such as signing the Women’s Empowerment Principles, improving diversity in senior management and on boards, developing more gender-friendly policies, developing a gender-themed investment product, or improving transparency on gender policies and practices.

Out of the 65 bell ringing celebrations that took place globally from March 5th - 27th, Women in ETFs was the lead partner on 18 events. These Bell Ringing events welcomed WE leadership teams, corporate sponsors, and members, with host speakers presenting the business case for women’s economic empowerment.

  #PRESSFORPROGRESS
  Investor Action for Gender Equality

Each year, International Women’s Day serves as an opportunity to commemorate the women’s rights movement and to accelerate implementation of the UN Sustainable Development Goals and the 2030 agenda, specifically goal 5 “achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls” and goal 4 “ensure inclusive and quality education for all and promote lifelong learning.”

The theme for this year, which was celebrated on March 8th, was #pressforprogress.

  • How are countries around the world advancing towards gender parity on corporate boards?
  • What are the actions investors can take and are taking in pressing for progress within their asset allocation and amongst portfolio companies?

We invite you to listen to the replay of this conversation on these topics from experts in the field.
