WE US | 4th Annual Breakfast at InsideETFs
JANUARY 23, 2017
WE hosted our 4th Annual Women in ETFs Breakfast on Monday, January 23, 2017 at the Inside ETFs conference in Hollywood, Florida.  WE would like to extend a special thank you to our guest speakers Alice Handy, Founder, CEO and President of Investure, and Suni Harford, Managing Director and Citi’s Regional Head of Markets for North America, for a memorable and actionable fireside chat.

Further, WE would like to acknowledge our Corporate Sponsors for their generosity and support, as well as our host, Inside ETFs, and everyone across the organization, including Marketing, who contributed to the tremendous success of the breakfast.  Finally, thank you to Asset TV for collaborating with WE on video content and recordings surrounding the event.

This year’s breakfast was a record-breaker as 280 attendees joined in the Diplomat’s Atlantic Ballrooms to hear about progress of the organization and for an exciting fireside chat on professional development.  With attendance up 25% from prior years, hotel staff had to bring in more chairs to accommodate everyone!  Moreover, it was encouraging to see the breadth and depth of experience, roles and diversity in the room.  Attendees represented more than 125 firms, with 32% being male (up from an average of 20% in prior years), and roughly 40% non-members who showcased their interest in the organization via their attendance.

As attendees enjoyed their breakfast, Jill Mavro, Co-President of WE, opened the event and shared many milestones and statistics highlighting the growth of WE in just a few short years.  With membership topping 2,500, new Chapters formed and a plethora of events to highlight, the audience was quite impressed.  The event provided an excellent opportunity to educate both members and non-members on all aspects of WE’s impact on, and progress in, the industry.  Jill also played a brief video that included commentary from a number of Chapters who shared details on activity, notable events and success stories.

Joanne Hill, WE founder and former Co-President, then joined Jill on stage to award Deborah Fuhr with the first annual Service Award.  It was a surprise for Deborah and an exciting moment in WE’s history as the organization acknowledged her role and contribution to WE and within the industry.

Following Deborah's acceptance of the award and an update on the 2017 bell ringing activity surrounding International Women’s Day, Diana Tidd, WE Co-President kicked off the fireside chat.  After some brief opening remarks about the progress women are making in leadership roles, Diana turned it over to Alice and Suni to provide overviews of their backgrounds and professional experience.

Both women articulated that while not without challenges, they have very much enjoyed the journey so far and truly enjoy what they do.  The discussion was filled with great facts, actionable comments and our guest speakers were extremely authentic.  The importance of data was also highlighted – knowing where you are starting from is just as important as knowing where you would like to go in terms of diversity, leadership and the development of women.

The attendees left with a new WE branded tote bag, stuffed by a number of volunteers (including future WE members!) with lots of goodies from WE’s Gold Sponsors (Citi, Deutsche Asset Management, iShares/BlackRock, J.P. Morgan Asset Management, State Street Global Advisors/SPDR, and Vanguard).

WE Leadership in attendance for the breakfast and Inside ETFs conference
In addition to WE’s signature breakfast event, WE had its own booth within the exhibit hall.  Over the course of the conference, WE leadership “womaned” the booth to educate conference attendees about the organization and its mission, encourage membership, and increase our brand and awareness. Overall, it was a truly exciting start to 2017 for Women in ETFs!
